“Print is dead”

My future career aspirations are to work in the magazine industry – even though everyone says print is dead. I disagree with that statement.

I currently work as managing editor at Knoxville Style Media (check out the link) and it is a digital and print publication. I can tell you from experience, that a lot of people still want a physical copy in their hands. I can’t tell you how many times a week I get asked “where can I buy a copy?” or “when will the print copies be out?” That alone solidifies the fact that print is not dead.

Yes, I do agree that more and more publications are going digital but why wouldn’t they? It’s a smart money move. We live in a world where everything is instantaneous and when you want something, you want it right there in two seconds.  It’s the same for magazines. People want access to the articles that they are interested in at any point. So having a digital copy gives readers instant access.

However, I personally buy magazines to have them – even if I already read everything online, I want the tangible item.

I don’t mean to rant, I just don’t think that “print is dead” and it hurts my soul every time someone asks me about my future career aspirations and then tell me nothing will come of it because “print is dead.”

Print might be on the decline, but I don’t think it will every truly die. Too many people still want the physical items to hold onto.

End of my rant.
